  • The Folklore of 420

What is the origin story of this highly (pun intended) celebrated day in April and, for some, a daily ritualistic time in the day that exists in cannabis culture? Some trace it back to a police code that signaled “Smoking Marijuana in Progress” followed by a pained paranoia “Oh no! Code 420 – we gotta get out of here!”  Many partakers attribute the term 420 to the number of active chemical compounds that are found in the plant, while others claim it’s from a Bob Dylan song.

The truth in the matter, perhaps, is that the term was coined in the 70s by a group of Californian teens, The Waldos, whom qualified their name by meeting outside a specific wall of their high school, and 4:20pm is the time they would depart from their meeting spot and go on the hunt for the mythical crop; a stoners’ scavenger hunt of sorts!

Here at Enerhealth the consensus from all the employees is that 420’s origin is either from the legislation that was passed when it was legalized in Colorado, from Bob Marley’s birthday (according to Wikipedia it’s actually February 6th), or from a hip office staff that loved to end their day early, around 4:20pm, and bond over the herb. Similar to the Waldo story, an employee insists 420 is from the 70s when the herb smoking Berkeley students would get out of afternoon classes and meet at – have you guessed the time yet? – 4:20pm!

I’m not particularly sold on one story, after all, it is cannabis folklore, but I enjoy asking people their stories on the origin of 420. Here at Enerhealth, we celebrate cannabis as a healing plant that is transforming people’s lives, both on 420 and every day!

In celebration of the plant in all its greatness, stay tuned for a special offer from Enerhealth!

Ten Hemp Companies That Even Your Mom Would Love at the NoCo Hemp Expo

The NoCo Hemp Expo is one of the largest gatherings of hemp companies in the world. Now in its fourth year, the expo features more than 130 exhibitors and more than 60 industry speakers. The expo held an industry-only day on March 31; today at 10 a.m., it opens to the public at the Ranch in Loveland. In the meantime, here are ten hemp businesses we couldn't wait to write home about.

    1. Colorado Hemp Company

Expo host the Colorado Hemp Company makes paper, business cards, posters and clothing, all from hemp. Founded in 2012, the company has become a leading voice in the industry for advocacy and for organizing events like the NoCo Hemp Expo.

    2. Dahlia's Botanicals

Why not tell your mom about a company run by another mom? Dahlia's Botanicals was founded by Moriah Barnhart, whose daughter Dahlia was diagnosed with brain cancer at the age of two. Like many hemp and CBD companies, Dahlia's Botanicals sells endocannabiniod nutraceuticals, but a portion of the proceeds go toward CannaMoms, an organization Barnhart founded that supports other moms advocating for the right to use cannabis to care for their critically ill children.

    3. Enerhealth Botanicals

Whether your mom is looking for hot cocoa, coffee, herbal extracts or protein powder, Enerhealth Botanicals has it all. The company even has a line of "superfood" powders and meal replacements to keep the whole family healthy.

    4. EvoHemp

Any mom worth her salt carries snacks in her bag, but these aren't your usual granola bars. EvoHemp bars come in flavors like Mango Macadamia and Pineapple Almond. The ingredients are all locally grown, and the bars are made entirely in the U.S.

    5. Folium Biosciences

Does your mom have a dog child she might love more than she loves you? Folium Biosciences creates veterinarian-approved CBD products. Whether you're looking for pumpkin-flavored dog chews, treats or CBD pills to give older, ailing pets, Folium has something for every animal, of every size. It's even started making feed for horses.

    6. Hempy's

Need cheeky clothing for your hippie, earth-loving mom? Hempy's has you covered. From a T-shirt with whale art and the saying "Save the Humans" to classic knit beanies and shoulder bags, Hempy's has been a staple in the hemp movement for more than twenty years, with all U.S.-manufactured products.

    7. Nature's Root

Not only does Nature's Root create lotion, lip balm, a lip scrub and a hemp coffee scrub, but it's opened the first hemp-based spa in the world. Book a spa day for your mom in Loveland; Nature's Root is working on additional locations, including one in Jamaica!

    8. One Love Tea

If you're on the hunt for the perfect CBD-infused tea, look no further than One Love Tea. The company offers a wide variety, from black tea to yerba mate, and even has an infuser bottle so you can easily steep the tea on the go, right in the bottle.

    9. Satya Creative

Like many companies, Satya Creative develops hemp-based lotions and salves. What's different? Satya is edible and can be used as an "intimacy enhancer." Its website is under development, but orders can be made through shadi@satyacreative.com.

    10. Steep Fuze Coffee

Steep Fuze Coffee infuses coffee beans with CBD. What more could a mom want? Steep Fuze is made right here in Colorado, and its CBD coffee can be purchased online or in dispensaries across the state.

  • Four years into hemp’s legalization, NoCo Expo again lures industry leaders, visionaries

    By: John Garvey

LOVELAND -- The 4th NoCo Hemp Expo, held March 31-April 1 in Loveland, again affirmed Northern Colorado’s place at the hemp industry’s epicenter.

The largest hemp business event in the U.S. -- if not the world -- the Expo drew more than 100 businesses specializing in hemp products and ancillary services, plus legal advocates, artists and dozens of speakers

Shortly after hemp’s legalization under Amendment 64, a group of thought leaders organized the first NoCo Hemp Expo, an inauspicious meeting held in a Loveland bar.

By its third year, the event had become a Mecca for hemp entrepreneurs and activists. The list of speakers, vendors and sponsors reads like a Who’s Who of industry players.

Hemp didn’t draw nearly the attention of the legal marijuana industry out of the gates, but the Expo -- now held at The Ranch Events Complex -- has gone far beyond its low-key origins.

For Dr. Christopher Shade, CEO and founder of Lafayette-based THR Technologies, nutraceutical cannabis was a natural extension of the company’s previous work in natural products.

THR, a subsidiary of Quicksilver Scientific, specializes in lipid nanoparticle technology for use in dietary supplements.

“Quicksilver developed around technologies for assessing and treating metal toxicity in people,” said Shade. “To effectively treat people we needed to develop a better delivery system for nutraceuticals.

“And we used lipid nanoparticle technology for making little spheres -- sometimes called liposomes -- to increase absorption of nutraceutical compounds in the GI tract. And as we made these better and better, we got them so they’d absorb right through the oral cavity into circulation.”

A superior extraction process should result in a repeatable, metered, predictable dose, Shade said. Based on THR’s previous work on products like green tea extract and resveratrol, Shade said the medical cannabis industry was an obvious fit.

Since most Colorado-grown hemp is used for consumables such as tinctures, industry players are grappling to refine the chemical extraction process to maximize purity, bioavailability (think absorption) and palatability.

The plant contains compounds including cannabinoids and terpenes that are increasingly sought after for their medicinal properties. Best known among many, cannabidiol (CBD) has been used to formulate medications undergoing FDA testing for Dravet Syndrome, a crippling form of epilepsy.

THC, the main psychoactive compound in cannabis, is essentially absent in hemp. By legal definition, hemp must contain less than 0.3 percent THC on a dry weight basis.

So while it can’t get people high, the legal distinction between hemp and “marijuana” is somewhat arbitrary.

Hemp’s nutritional value is another industry focus. Longmont-based EnerHealth Botanicals recently distinguished itself by becoming the first company to get U.S.-grown hemp seeds on grocery shelves.

Robbie Jaramillo, the company’s director of customer support and sales, said he is proud of this milestone.

“One of our aims when we developed the product and started with the R&D … was to have a 16-ounce bag cheaper than [industry leader Manitoba Harvest]. And at the Natural Grocers store it is. It’s cheaper by 10 cents.”

Jaramillo said he believes the much more mature Canadian industry is supportive of America’s emerging hemp market in spite of the inevitable competition.

The considerable majority of all Colorado hemp is grown for self-care and medicinal products derived from its oils. Its highly-nutritious grain contains all nine essential amino acids and a healthy accompaniment of fatty acids, yet less than 10 percent of all plants cultivated in the state are for food.

For those yearning to see hemp’s industrial potential unleashed, the gaping infrastructure gap for processing hemp fiber and stalk is the key issue.

The processing machinery required for seed, clothing, rope, composites and other purposes varies considerably. Because hemp farms tend to be small and have unique needs, a small number of firms like Power Zone Equipment, Inc. are designing and retrofitting farming equipment to suit the individual needs of growers.

“We don’t necessarily go out and build off-the-shelf stuff,” notes PowerZone marketing director Brandon Maston.

“We build custom stuff, so we’re building directly to a farmer’s needs, directly to a specific purpose as opposed to trying to find out what’s something that might work for a lot of people and then requiring them to conform to what we want them to.”

The company's Grasshopper is a decorticator of Maston’s design. Decortication separates hemp fiber from hurd, which is necessary to process industrial hemp but very few such machines are available in the U.S.

Hemp can be used in building materials such as drywall and “hempcrete”-- a hemp-lime mixture with some advantages over concrete -- as well as textiles, rope and composites used in car panels.

Hemp fiber is the strongest plant fiber found in nature. Yet while the plant’s durability is fundamental to its industrial value, it also makes it challenging to process.

In 2015, Colorado had 8,844 acres registered for hemp cultivation -- far more than every other state combined. Kentucky, the runner up, had slightly more than half that figure.

Expo organizers said hemp is extremely versatile and holds great promise for its industrial and medicinal properties. And while the infrastructure and economies of scale aren’t quite there, the Centennial State seems likely to remain the industry’s vanguard.

  • Take Action Now!

DEA declares non-psychoactive CBD to be a Schedule 1 substance!

On Tuesday 12/13 the DEA made a sweeping decision to place CBD extracts in the category of Schedule 1, which defines them as having no medicinal purpose and high-risk of abuse.

"Schedule I drugs, substances, or chemicals are defined as drugs with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. Some examples of Schedule I drugs are: heroin, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), marijuana (cannabis), 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (ecstasy), methaqualone, and peyote."

You can read the DEA document here

This is especially disconcerting given that CBD oil is specifically designed to be a healthy and beneficial dietary supplement. Since it does not produce a mind-altering state nor have any known adverse side effects, it would not seem to have a "high potential for abuse". Case studies suggest that CBD oil does indeed have an "accepted medical use" and these studies can be readily found on the internet.

The DEA did this in direct contradiction to existing law, the 2014 Farm bill which specifically states that all parts of the hemp plant are legal and allows for interstate transport of hemp products. The DEA is acting as if it were Congress in effect by implementing 'administrative actions' that for all practical purposes create new 'laws' that usurp Congress' authority.

Unless there is a change, on 1/13/17 there is a high-possibility that CBD processors will no longer be able to ship this product to people who rely on it to help manage their well being. It will only be available within the states where cannabis is already legal. This is an unacceptable infringement on your rights as a US citizen! It is time to take back control over our destinies.

If you are unsure about how to contact your representatives, then just use this link to easily find out their name and how to contact them. Find Your Representatives here!

All of us need to make our voices heard now! Call both your incoming and outgoing representatives and let them know that this action is unacceptable. The only way to stop this is to take immediate action, and it needs to come from each and every one of us to stop this needless infringement on our rights!

  • Chocolate is good for you!

Researchers Say Eating Chocolate Every Day Can Have Serious Health Benefits.

chocolate_stack_shutterstockGreat News: Thanks to new research by the American Heart Association, chocoholics have yet another healthy reason to justify their habit.

Researchers have found a link between daily chocolate consumption and heart health, according to recent findings presented at the association's Epidemiology/Lifestyle 2016 Scientific Sessions. Eating chocolate on a daily basis may improve insulin levels and liver enzymes in adults, according to a study presented at the American Heart Association’s Epidemiology/Lifestyle 2016 Scientific Sessions.

Researchers studied 1,153 adults, ages 18 to 69 years between 2007 and 2009. Of all the participants, 81.8 percent were classified as chocolate consumers. They found that consuming 100 mg of chocolate daily was associated with lower levels of insulin resistance, serum insulin and liver enzymes, markers associated with heart disease risk. The study concluded that chocolate consumers were more likely to be younger, physically active, affluent people, who had higher education levels and fewer chronic health issues.

This study is just a small part of a large growing body of evidence discovering more and more health benefits of daily chocolate consumption. Dark chocolate is packed with organic compounds that are biologically active and function as antioxidants. A recent study showed that cocoa and dark chocolate contained more antioxidant activity, polyphenols, and flavanols than other fruits they tested, which included blueberries and Acai berries.

In a study of 470 elderly men, cocoa was found to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death by a whopping 50% over a 15-year period. Another study revealed that eating chocolate 2 or more times per week lowered the risk of having calcified plaque in the arteries by 32%. Eating chocolate less frequently had no effect. Yet another study showed that chocolate 5+ times per week lowered the risk of cardiovascular disease by 57%.

Cocoa MojoIt’s becoming more and more clear that eating chocolate on a daily basis is not only delicious for chocolate lovers, but is so very good for our overall health and wellness.

By combining the health benefits of chocolate with the immune supporting benefit of medicinal mushrooms, Enerhealth Botanicals has created Organic Cocoa Mojo - the most delicious and healthy cocoa powder available! Made with 100% certified organic cocoa powder, lightly sweetened with low-glycemic organic coconut palm sugar, and infused with EnerHealth’s special blend of medicinal herbs, Cocoa Mojo is the ultimate healthy treat for all hardcore chocoholics!

So we say go ahead! Love your chocolate and not feel guilty about it!
